6 regions, 1 federal province

The six Lower Austrian holiday destinations are highly diverse in terms of culture and landscape.

At the six TOP destinations in Lower Austria, you will find an incomparable diversity of possible excursions, landscapes and unforgettable moments for every event.

The Danube flows through Austria’s largest province from east to west and has been its lifeline since time immemorial. There are so many magic moments in store for visitors: in picturesque landscapes shaped by human hand such as the Wachau or in untouched nature of the kind found in the Danube Wetlands National Park, not to mention cultural heritage sites of the highest caliber such as Göttweig Abbey or Carnuntum Archeological Park.

Waldviertel and Weinviertel

To the north of the Danube is the Waldviertel with its vast forests and crystal clear rivers, its blue lakes and dark ponds. It is a region just made to re-energize people, a place where people can kick back, let go and simply enjoy. The Weinviertel with its gently rolling hills is the most tranquil, idyllic and serene region of Lower Austria. You encounter wine here in many different places – at heuriger wine taverns or on cycling tours, at traditional vintner festivals or during an outing at one of the more than 1,000 cellar-lined country roads.

Mostviertel, Vienna Woods and Vienna Alps

The Mostviertel is to the south of the Danube. In the spring its orchards burst into a glorious sea of blossoms. The southern part of the region is dominated by high peaks, bubbling brooks and nearly untouched forests and was once the site of a flourishing iron industry. Woods, water and wine play the leads in the Vienna Woods. Traditional health resorts such as Baden bei Wien enliven mind and body. Wine enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the highly distinct local wine and heuriger wine tavern culture here. And the Alps offer one last show of scenic splendor in the Vienna Alps in the far south. This region between stunning peaks, vast mountain pastures and scenic mountain waters remains a popular destination for summers in the country or winter holidays.
